Welcome to Adrian Hanft's Portfolio

I am one of the lucky kids who actually became what I wanted to be when I grew up. I think my exact word was probably "astronaut," but what I was really saying was that I wanted to have the best job in the world. There are definitely ups and downs, but getting paid to create things is a pretty nice gig. If you are looking to hire a designer you are going to look through a ton of portfolios. My hope is that if you take one thing away from my book it is that I am the most passionate and prolific designers you are likely to meet. Let's get started, shall we?

I divided this site into three sections: Web, Print, and Logos. You can use the navigation on the top of each page for a broad tour, or you can use the list below if you want to see something more specific. If you get very deep you may need a password, so send me an email and I will grant you access to the top secret areas.

(Click here to download a pdf resume.)

**Adrian E. Hanft, III**
Bachelor of Fine Arts, Graphic Design
Concordia University, Seward, Nebraska

Interactive Art Director, HuebnerPetersen, Loveland, Colorado
October 2003-Present
HuebnerPetersen is an advertising agency that specializes in positioning, promoting and protecting brands. The best part about working for a small agency is that I get to be an important member of a passionate team. I am involved in nearly all aspects of the projects from concept all the way through execution. Whether I writing HTML markup, creating Flash animation, building an identity, manipulating photographs, or just laying out text, I take great pride in being able to firmly leave my fingerprint on a project.

Co-Founder, Be A Design Group, www.beadesigngroup.com
March 2004-Present
In 2004 I started a graphic design blog called Be A Design Group. I am quite proud of the site and the thousands of daily visitors that it attracts, but that isn't why I am listing it on my resume. First of all, the hundreds of posts I have written for the site are a direct portal into my brain and how I approach design. Second, since I wrote every line of code on the site, it is a great example of my web design skills. The Be A Design Group website uses every tool in the modern web designer's arsenal: style sheets, PHP, server-side includes, podcasts, Flash replacement text, RSS feeds, email based subscriptions, search engine optimization, valid XHTML, search forms, contact forms, advertisements, javascript, comprehensive traffic analytics, and pretty much everything that is driving web design today.

Graphic Designer, Nelnet, Lincoln, Nebraska
December 2002-October 2003
Nelnet is one of the leading company's in the student loan industry. My responsibilities as a member of Nelnet's marketing and communications team was to provide design for the different divisions of the Nelnet Corporation. The marketing department's goal was not only to promote brand awareness, but also to develop identity systems within the subdivisions that exist within Nelnet's corporate structure. This was achieved by defining graphic standards and implementing those standards through all corporate materials. I was responsible for the design of HTML emails, Flash presentations, product demos, web design, interactive newsletters, online calculators, PowerPoint templates, identity system development, and a variety of printed materials. I was responsible for communicating directly with our clients and vendors while managing multiple projects with tight deadlines and low budgets.

Freelance Graphic Designer, Focus on the Family, Colorado Springs
Colorado, 1999-2002
Focus on the Family hired me to help with one of their publications, Brio Magazine. I started out creating digital illustrations and eventually grew into layout of the monthly magazine. My illustrations used some of my own photography as well as some intensive Photoshop manipulation.

Graphic Designer, Front Range Community College, Westminster, Colorado
February-June 2002
At Front Range Community College I was responsible for the concept, development, and production of internal materials. I designed posters, flyers, advertisements, and brochures with consideration for the unique departments and five different Front Range campuses.

Graphic Designer, ConcorDesign, Concordia University, Seward, Nebraska
2000-2001
As designer for ConcorDesign my work included illustration, layout, and digital photography. I designed the layout and illustration for the Spring 2001 Issues Magazine. In addition to posters and brochures promoting the University, I also designed the Christmas card for Concordia University in 2000.

Photographer, Communications Department, Concordia University, Seward, Nebraska
1997-2001
As photographer for Concordia University I was responsible for organizing photo shoots, photographing campus events, and darkroom printing and developing. My photographs were used in publications of the University as well as promotional materials.

My Toolbox
I use the following software pretty much daily: InDesign, Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator, Dreamweaver, and a handful of supplemental programs. I am a Mac fanatic but I know my way around a PC just as well. I am comfortable behind the lens of the latest digital cameras, but I have been known to build cameras from scratch to indulge my photo fetish.

Welcome

You don't normally think of a portfolio as a place where a designer spills his guts, but I am going to break that tradition. Graphic design isn't a casual career choice. It's my life and if you and I are going to work together I should be completely honest with you. Unfortunately, being brutally honest has a downside. People don't like their dirty laundry made public so I have had to password protect some of this site. If you try and get very deep you will need to contact mefor the password. I apologize for the inconvenience. I will respond as soon as I can, but in the meantime you can still look at pictures. That's the fun part anyway, I suppose.

I am going to keep rambling here for a while, so if you want to just dig into my work feel free to use the navigation at the top of this page to just get started. Otherwise, let me tell you a little about myself...

Depending on where I start counting, I am about five to ten years into my career as a graphic designer. I finally have enough work under my belt that I have a pretty good idea of the direction I want to push my career. Graphic designers have a unique occupation because we are almost always communicating other people's messages. Aside from the occassional self promotion effort, we are one step removed from everything we do. This forces us to make a decision in our work. We either take the time to invest ourselves in the products we are promoting or we accept the separation and make the best of it. Many designers are hugely successful in the second category, but I am not one of them. I am at my best when I am working for people and projects that I believe in. That is what I am searching for as I make my career plan. I want to work on things that I believe in. I want to help people whose values align with mine.

I am currently employed as an art director for an advertising agency called HuebnerPetersen in Northern Colorado.
Writing: A Designer's Secret Weapon

Writing: A Designer's Secret Weapon

This third of my site consists of words. Content. Without it you don't have design, you just have eye candy. I am not interested in applying a sugar coating to weak messages. The best designers have the ability to craft the content and strengthen the communication. Skilled designers are just as obsessed with what the words say as with how they look. Growing as a designer involves learning how to be a better communicator. That means you have to know how to write, and that takes practice. The best way that I have found to become a better writer is to write about things that I am passionate about like design, photography, and music. In short, I became a blogger.

I write about design on a graphic design blog called Be A Design group, which I co-founded in 2004. If you browse through the BADG archives I hope you see my commitment to growing as a designer and understanding what that title means.

I also write a photography blog at Found Photography where I describe some of my camera experiments and share observations from my non-traditional approach to picture taking. Photography is an exciting hobby and a nice alternative to the stress that sometimes accompanies my "day job."

Finally, I maintain a personal blog called Adrian3 where I talk about everything else that is going on in my life. Favorite topics include my son, music, customer service, and things that annoy me.

Sometimes blogging gets a bad reputation, but for me it has been a fun way to learn to communicate better. Below are some other "wordy" things like my resume, some biographical data, and the obligatory contact info.

That is the best way to accurately match the design work to the organizations and values they represent.

My print design strengths are in photography and identity development. Below you can see an assortment of my work but if you want to see more of my work you can also browse by the following categoryies:

Web Design

Web Design

It seems that anyone with Photoshop skills can get away with calling themselves a web designer today. The initial sketch is undoubtedly an important part of the process, but building a website is more than a pretty picture. On the other side of the table are the developers. They can make your head spin with technical lingo but often struggle to take a good design and turn it into a website. If you study the really good websites you will notice that they have found a way to overcome the designer vs. developer friction. The only way this happens is when there is someone who can live in both worlds and nagivate the storms that inevitably haunt all web projects. My years spent in a small agency have allowed me to be both a designer and a developer and that gives me a huge advantage when I am leading a web project.

The websites (and interactive things) below are a good representation of my web work. I write the code in XHTML and CSS with an awareness of key words and search engine optimization. When appropriate I use Flash, blogs, content management systems, forms, search boxes, stores, games, ads, RSS, video, or whatever technology best meets the needs of the site. Many of the sites are hosted on servers that I manage. On a small to mid size site I regularly do everything from concept to completion. Ideally I am working very closely with the site's decision maker because this allows me to avoid the politics and comittees that extend the development time from weeks to months or even years.

Welcome

My name is Adrian Hanft, III and this is my online portfolio. I am in the middle of a transition from a Flash based portfolio to this one powered by Movable Type. The advantage of using blog software to manage a portfolio is that I can easily add and remove samples at will. It isn't as slick as the Flash version, but it makes it easy for me to manage my work and talk about things as much or as little as necessary. A side-effect of using a content management system to power my book is that it multiplies the size of my portfolio. There is probably way more than you need to see here because I have tried to document most of what I have done. It is probably overkill, so browse at your own risk.

My portfolio is currently password protected, so if you are interested in digging very deep through my work you will have to contact me and I will send you a password. I apologize for the inconvenience.
